this is the FIFTH year of me doing a short story advent agenda as my december project. for those of you new to me or this endeavour, here'south the skinny: every mean solar day in dec, i will be reading a short story that is 1) bachelor free somewhere on internet, and 2) listed on goodreads equally its ain discrete entity. there will be links provided for those of you who like to read (or listen to) short stories for free, and also for those of y'all who have wildly overestimated how many books you can read in a yr and are freaking out about non coming together your 2020 reading-claiming goals. i have been gathering links all year when tasty little tales have popped into my feed, but i volition also accept boosted suggestions, as long every bit they encounter my same 1), 2) standards, because i have not compiled as many as usual this year.
IN ADDITION, this may exist the concluding year i do this project since GR has already deleted the pages for several of the stories i've read in previous years without warning, leaving me with a bunch of missing reviews and broken links, which makes me feel shitty. considering i don't have a lot of time to waste product, i'1000 not going to bother writing much in the way of reviews for these, in case gr decides to scrap 'em over again. 2020 has left me utterly wrung out and i apologize for what's left of me. i am doing my best.
DECEMBER 13: IF AT Starting time YOU DON'T SUCCEED, TRY, Effort AGAIN - ZEN CHO
this one grew into v stars for me. it didn't kickoff out that mode—in the beginning, i was getting kinda bored and bogged downwardly in the folktaliness of it; the story of an imugi studying the Fashion in social club to ascend and become a dragon &yadda. but that all inverse when i got to this office here:
Byam turned for its last look at the world as an imugi. The lake shone in the dominicus. Information technology had been cold, and miserable, and lonely, full of venomous h2o snakes that bit Byam's tail. Byam had been dying to go away from it.Just now, it felt a neat of affection. When it returned as a dragon, it would anoint the lake. Fish would overflow its banks. The cows and pigs and goats would multiply beyond counting. The crops would spring out of the globe in their multitudes…
A thin screechy noise was coming from the lake. When Byam squinted, it saw a group of little creatures on the western banking concern. Humans.
One of them was shaking a fist at the sky. "Fuck y'all, imugi!"
"Oh shit," said Byam.
one time the story took on a more than...contemporary tone, i absolutely loved it. to this imugi, i say: Same—getting mired in frustration over not achieving one's goals, being thwarted by fate and happenstance despite prolonged efforts, hard work, ingenuity of approach, feeling foolish for having dreams, for wanting more, becoming accustomed to failure, accepting one'southward lot, resigned to making a life smaller than you lot'd hoped and finding happiness in this smaller life while nevertheless experiencing twinges of thwarted appetite—it is all very relatable.
"Sometimes," information technology said, "you try really difficult and it'south not enough. Yous put in all you've got and you even so never go where y'all thought you were meant to be...It hurts. Knowing it wasn't plenty, even when y'all gave information technology the best of yourself. Merely you get over it."
it'southward a crappy hand, knowing you have the potential to exist a dragon but no affair how hard you endeavor to dial through, people don't see you for what you are—or what you're trying and so hard to become—and you finish upwardly stuck in the life of a goddamn worm.
plainly there was a sequel to this story: Head of a Ophidian, Tail of a Dragon, which was available to read on the author's site until terminal may, and yet SOMEHOW the gr scrubbers haven't deleted its page even though they have deleted 9 of my appearance-stories, simply that'southward just FINE. i missed it by months, only because it was available for two years, i only have myself to blame for non getting to it sooner. the story will become bachelor once more, in a drove the author will exist self-publishing, and as someone who does a lot of piece of work for free—a situation which gives me a lot of the aforementioned feelings as byam the imugi—trying and trying and getting nowhere, and feeling similar a failure—i get her decision considering non getting paid for piece of work, especially creative piece of work, really sucks.
deplorable. seems i'm in a MOOD tonight.

this is a beautiful fairytale virtually preservation and dreams, starting in ancient times and moving all the manner into our modern age. i was pleasantly surprised by this, non expecting from the manner it started off to see selfies and hashtags eventually play a function in the narrative.
information technology'south a very charming tale, and byam's commentary on human society is oftentimes hilarious. there is such tragedy and fearfulness of failure hidden in its character that it made me Emotional™ to the indicate where i shed a solitary tear when this novelette came to its cease.
also, i'm a sucker for mythical creature + human relationships. and specially for a brusque story, this (queer) relationship had enough warmth, depth, and fun to entreatment to me in every style.

This pleasant novelette won the 2019 Hugo Award, and it's free online. Such a wise, funny, touching, and lovely tale...
The underlining in the excerpts is mine:
Only the eastern side was still reserved to beasts and spirits. There was plenty of space for an imugi to have off.
The mountains around the lake said hello to Byam.
(It was always safer to be polite to an imugi, since y'all never knew when it might plough into a dragon.) The sky above them was a pure light blueish, dotted with clouds like white jade.Byam's centre rose. Information technology launched itself into the air, the sun warm on its back.
***
For the start half-millennium or and then, Byam could be confident of finding the solitude necessary for study. Simply more recently, in that location seemed to exist more and more humans everywhere.
Humans weren't all bad. You couldn't meditate your way through every doctrinal puzzle, and that was where monks proved useful.
Of course, fifty-fifty the almost enlightened monk was wont to be alarmed by the sudden appearance of a giant serpent wanting to know what they thought of the Sage's comments on water. Still, y'all could unremarkably extract some guidance from them, once they stopped screaming.
A herd of cows was grazing by the bank, as though they were waiting for Byam.
It only intended to consume 1 cow. Information technology wanted to keep sharp for its ascension.
Dragons probably didn't consume much. All the dragons Byam had ever seen were graceful, with perfect scales, shining talons, silky beards.Unfortunately Byam wasn't a dragon still. It was hungry, and the cows smelled so proficient. Byam had one, so another, and then a third, telling itself each fourth dimension that this cow would be the terminal. Earlier it knew it, virtually the whole herd was gone.
***
But you had to get out of the h2o in order to ascend.
It was incommunicable to exclude the possibility of being seen by humans, fifty-fifty in the heart of the ocean. It didn't seem to bother them that they couldn't breathe underwater; they notwithstanding launched themselves onto the waves on rickety assemblages of dismembered trees. Information technology was equally if they couldn't wait to get on to their side by side lives.
It hadn't helped back so that the lake humans had named Byam for what information technology was: no dragon, but an imugi, a degraded beingness no improve than the crawling beasts of the earth.
Simply if, as Byam flashed across the sky, a witness saw a dragon… that was another affair. Heaven wasn't immune to the pressures of public perception. It would have to recognise Byam and then. The spirits of the wind and water were likewise hard to bluff; fish were too self-captivated; and there was no promise of hoodwinking the bounding main dragons. Just
humans had bad eyesight, and a tendency to see things that weren't there. Their chapters for self-deception was Byam'southward all-time bet.***
Sometimes Byam felt like giving up.
How could information technology brand a dragon when it didn't fifty-fifty know how to exist 1?To conquer self-dubiety, it chanted the aphorisms of the wise:
Nobody becomes a dragon overnight.
Real dragons keep going.
A dragon is simply an imugi that didn't surrender.
***
But in that location were consolations bachelor to imugi who reconciled themselves to their fate. Like revenge.
But you couldn't study something for three,000 years without condign interested in it for its own sake.
"Tell me almost your research," said Byam.
"What you said only now," said the monk. "Did you not – "
Byam showed its teeth.
"My research!" said the monk. "Let me tell you almost information technology."
***
"It's impressive," she said. "That y'all're so open to learning new things.
If I were a celestial fairy, there'southward no way I'd work so hard. I'd just lie around getting drunkard and eating peaches all day.""You have a skewed image of the life of a celestial fairy," said Byam.
Byam bethought itself of the other creature that was important in their lives.
"Did you tell the true cat? Is that why it doesn't like me?""I've told you, I can't actually talk to the cat," said Leslie. (Which was a breathy lie, because she did it all the time, though it was true they had strange conversations, generally at cross-purposes.)
***
Before, Byam had always thought that humans must be used to dying, since they did it all the time. But now it had got to know them better, it saw they had no idea how to deal with it.This was unfortunate, because Byam didn't know either.
***
"Am I not skilful plenty as I am?"
"Of form you lot're good enough [...]. If you're happy, then that'due south fine. But you should know you tin exist anything yous want to exist. That's all.
I don't desire yous to let fearfulness hold you back."
